Robert M. La Follette School of Public Affairs Presents: Milwaukee 53206
Screening & Panel Discussion
Monday, May 7
6 to 8 p.m.
The Marquee Cinema, Union South, 1308 W. Dayton St.
- Professor Cecelia Klingele, UW-Madison’s Law School and La Follette School faculty affiliate
- Frank Davis, community organizer, MOSES
- Davette Baker, decarceration organizer, Citizen Action Wisconsin, and board member, Women’s March Wisconsin
Milwaukee 53206 shows the daily realities of people affected by mass incarceration in the United States. Through the intimate stories of three 53206 residents, the film demonstrates the high toll mass incarceration takes on individuals and families. The film also illuminates the story of people from across the United States who live with the daily effects of excessive jail sentences.
Incarcerated Women Need Love on Mother’s Day. Period.
Citizen Action and Women’s March Wisconsin stand in solidarity to uplift moms and families affected by our criminal justice system. Currently there are over 1800 women incarcerated in this state as of the end of 2017. Women are being incarcerated more in this state due to factors such as being charged when they fight their domestic partners back, for committing crimes of poverty, and struggling with mental illness and the lack of community resources to be well. It is our goal for Mother’s Day 2018 to provide some community support to uplift women and their families.
Together, we are raising money to help women incarcerated in Wisconsin. We will do that in two ways:
Currently inmates have to pay to be able to call and talk with their loved ones. This is an unfair practice that puts many families in a place where they cannot support their loved ones who are incarcerated because of the cost. Your donation will be going to assist in buying the phones out at our County Jail and House of Corrections to insure that EVERYONE can speak with their family on the day we celebrate Mom’s. It is our belief that being connected with your family and loved ones is ONE of MANY ways that help women, and their families, thrive.
We all know how difficult our time of the month can be, but imagine if you are incarcerated and dealing with your time of the month. You might not have access to what you need due to the high cost of commissary. As a woman, it is our RIGHT to have access to the products we need to take care of our health and hygiene. And the incarceral system that is run mostly by men, doesn’t understand what that means. Because of your donation, these women will be able to purchase commissary items, in both the house of corrections and the jail, that are better for their bodies.
So let’s help women, on this day that we celebrate moms, have access to choices instead of being forced to use something that may not work for them. And let’s also help them connect to their families, without adding to their debt. Please donate today!
