WAVE and Students of Waukesha Schools Work to End Gun Violence
Parents and students in Waukesha are working to build a network of concerned citizens who are ready to do something about ending gun violence. And they need YOUR help!
About 4 months ago, this group set a goal of getting the Waukesha School District Board of Education to adopt a resolution calling on the state legislature to pass common sense gun legislation. Since that time, a number of steps were taken, including an ad in the Freeman, contacting PTA and PTO organizations, writing board members, providing the board with information on resolutions passed by other school districts and, of course, appearing and speaking at board and committee meetings.
The efforts paid off. Several board members worked together to draft a resolution, and the draft resolution was discussed at the full board meeting on June 13. However, instead of voting on the language, it was handed to a newly-formed Safety Committee. Unfortunately, the board members who drafted the resolution are not on the new committee. Their next meeting will be July 12.
To get the resolution through this committee will require community members willing to speak on behalf of commonsense gun legislation and, when called upon, to write letters and turn out to school board meetings.
YOU are invited to join these efforts. Please plan to attend the July 12th meeting. Sign up here to be kept informed and to receive calls to action.
